We welcome the Ministry of Justice’s announcement of new ‘restriction zones’—a major step forward in protecting victims of domestic and sexual violence.
Unlike traditional exclusion zones, which prevent offenders from entering areas where victims live, restriction zones will confine offenders to specific areas. This means survivors can move freely, without fear of encountering their abuser.
Offenders who breach these zones could face prison recall.
Zones will be created with input from Probation Officers and victims, ensuring safety and freedom.
Monitoring will be supported by proven technology, including electronic tagging.
This change is part of the government’s Plan for Change, which aims to put victims first and make our communities safer.
“For far too long, victims have had to reshape their lives to avoid their offenders. This powerful step forward gives survivors the freedom they deserve to live, move and heal without fear.”
— Diana Parkes CBE & Hetti Barkworth-Nanton CBE, Joanna Simpson Foundation
Other reforms include:
  • Increased tagging for domestic abuse perpetrators
  • Better identification of abusers at sentencing
  • Expansion of Specialist Domestic Abuse Courts
  • Greater transparency for victims in the justice system
We stand with survivors and welcome these changes that shift the responsibility away from victims and onto perpetrators.
If you or someone you know is affected by domestic abuse, we’re here to help.
